The „Gnesin Virtuosi“
Youth Orchestra was founded in 1990 by Mikhail Khokhlov. Members of this orchestra
are musically gifted young students of the Gnesin Music School, which usually attend this school from early
childhood. They play under the direction of Mikhail Khokhlov, who is also the director of the conservatory.
More than 12,000 young musicians have been trained here over the years, more than 400 graduates have
received numerous awards and participated in international competitions. Many artists who have significantly
influenced the international music scene in the past began their musical studies at the Gnesin Academy,
including prominent personalities such as Igor Oistrakh, Irina Goldstein, Aram Khachaturian and Mstislav
Rostropovich. One of the currently most famous graduates is pianist Evgeny Kissin. In the years 2004 to
2009, the Gnesin Virtuosi have appeared in various productions of Else Klink Ensemble and the Eurythmie
Bühne am Goetheanum. In 2012 and 2014 they have been part of WHAT MOVES YOU, where they have
been rehearsing and performing Ludwig van Beethovens Fifth Symphony and Antonin Dvoraks Symphony
No. 9, together with our participants.
